This design started off with the client’s want to replace their steel balustrade with glass. During our first conversation with them, once they realised our capabilities, they quickly expanded their brief to include a revamp the upper courtyard completely.
The outdoor, overgrown courtyard desperately needed some love so that the family could better use it and also to increase its value and usability for guests. Being managed from afar the courtyard needed to be easy to maintain, easy and safe to operate (in the case of the gas fire) and with integrated seating that encouraged users to the front of the terrace where the sun lasts longest and the views over Lake Wakatipu to The Remarkables beyond are supreme.
We presented the client with three different options together with indicative costs, from simple to the full monty to test what they really wanted in terms of aesthetic, function and budget. They came back adamant on the gas pit option – the basis of this option has been retained relatively untouched from concept through to completion.
With the client being overseas at all times during the project, our design team based in Christchurch and our construction team based in Queenstown, project management and effective information flow were critical to this project. 3D graphics and email were the basis of much of our correspondence with our client as well as photos of the construction progress to keep them in the loop.
